How to Properly Clean Refrigerators

How to Properly Clean Refrigerators and Refrigerated Counters

Regular condenser maintenance extends the service life of the equipment

Professional refrigeration equipment is one of the most important parts of every gastro operation.

Refrigerators, freezers, refrigerated display cases and refrigerated counters often run continuously 24 hours a day, which makes regular maintenance essential. Proper cleaning helps maintain stable cooling performance, reduces energy consumption and significantly extends the service life of the equipment.

One of the most important maintenance tasks is cleaning the condenser. A clogged condenser is a common cause of reduced performance, higher electricity consumption and even motor failure.

Why is condenser cleaning so important?

The condenser removes heat from the appliance. If it becomes clogged with dust, grease or dirt from the operating environment, the equipment has to work harder to reach the required temperature. This can lead to several problems:

  • higher electricity consumption,
  • reduced cooling performance,
  • longer time to reach the required temperature,
  • motor overheating,
  • higher risk of failure,
  • shorter equipment service life.

In gastro operations, the air often contains grease, flour, dust or other impurities. These can gradually settle on the condenser and significantly reduce its proper function.

How often should the condenser be cleaned?

We recommend cleaning the condenser at least once a month. In more demanding environments, such as kitchens with higher dust levels, grease or intensive operation, it may be necessary to clean the condenser more often.

The cleaning frequency always depends on the specific operating conditions. A refrigerated counter in a restaurant, a display case in a bar and a refrigerator located in a kitchen storage area are each exposed to different levels of load.

How to properly clean the condenser of a refrigerator or refrigerated counter

Cleaning is simple and, when performed regularly, does not take much time. Always proceed carefully and pay attention to safety.

Switch off the equipment

Before cleaning, we recommend switching the appliance off and disconnecting it from the power supply. This helps prevent damage to the equipment and reduces the risk of electric shock.

Remove the equipment cover

Depending on the type of appliance, the condenser may be located in the upper or lower section. On some refrigerators, the top cover is removed; on display cases and refrigerated counters, the lower cover is usually removed. Remove the cover carefully to avoid damaging screws, holders or the casing itself.

Vacuum dirt from the condenser

Use a vacuum cleaner to carefully remove dust and dirt from the condenser. Work gently to avoid damaging the fins or other parts of the cooling system. We do not recommend using sharp objects, hard brushes or aggressive chemicals.

Put the cover back on

After cleaning, return the cover to its original position and check that it is properly secured. You can then reconnect the appliance and put it back into operation.

What should you pay attention to?

When maintaining refrigeration equipment, it is important to work regularly, but also correctly. It is not enough to simply wipe the outer surfaces or clean the interior. The technical part of the appliance is often overlooked, even though it has a major impact on cooling performance.

We recommend checking regularly:

  • condenser cleanliness,
  • free airflow around the appliance,
  • condition of the door seals,
  • proper door closing,
  • set temperature,
  • any unusual noises or changes in performance.

If the appliance cools worse than usual, runs for longer, heats up more or has higher consumption, a clogged condenser may be one of the first things to check.

Maintenance as prevention against failures

Regular cleaning is a simple step that can help prevent unnecessary service interventions. For professional equipment, prevention is always cheaper than repair.

A clogged condenser can overload the motor and cause damage to the equipment. Faults caused by insufficient maintenance are generally not covered by warranty. That is why it is advisable to include maintenance in the standard operating routine, just like cleaning work surfaces, hoods or kitchen equipment.

Recommendation for gastro operations

In restaurants, hotels, bars, canteens and retail shops, we recommend introducing a simple maintenance plan. Ideally, appoint a responsible person who will regularly check the condition of the refrigeration equipment and record completed cleaning.

For example, it is practical to keep a simple overview:

Equipment Cleaning date Condenser check Note Responsible person
Refrigerator / freezer / refrigerated counter / display case   Yes / no

Summary

Regular maintenance of refrigeration equipment is essential for proper operation, low energy consumption and long service life. A clean condenser helps the appliance work more efficiently, reduces the risk of motor overheating and helps prevent unnecessary failures.

We recommend cleaning at least once a month, or more often depending on operating intensity and surrounding conditions.

Regular maintenance = longer service life, lower consumption and reliable cooling performance.
